Women of Pattaya
Pattaya is literally full of women, most of them ‘available’. The city is unashamedly a destination for punters, and although there is far more to Pattaya than women, it’s the main reason many visitors come. Others find it all quite appalling, luckily Pattaya has much more to offer and you can easily avoid the scene – in other sections on this site we discuss the numerous ‘decent options’ for enjoyment in Pattaya.
But, from the freelancers loitering along the bayside promenade at night, to the numerous go go bars and massage parlours, the women of Pattaya are its chief attraction.
Thailand’s permissive tolerance towards prostitution has turned its women into a major drawcard, though you shouldn’t imagine every lady you meet is loose, in fact the attitudes experienced here are quite different from the typically conservative values of most Thais. But ever since the first wave of foreigners – American GIs on R&R from the Vietnam War – began arriving here in the 60s, Pattaya’s reputation has been staked on its women.
As the city grew from a fishing village to Thailand’s busiest resort area over the decades, women flocked to Pattaya from all over Thailand, but mainly from the poor Northeast, to make a living entertaining foreign men. They work as go go dancers, massueses, free-wheeling waitresses or simply ‘vacationers’ hoping to pick up a easy-spending ‘farang’ off the beach. Of course, the tourist industry is huge and also supports an even larger number of respectable women in Pattaya, earning a living honestly. Not everyone you meet here is ‘up for grabs’, so show a bot of respect.
It’s not difficult to find women to keep you company in Pattaya, the lanes along the beach road are lined with bars loaded with skimpy dressed girls who’ll happily go back to your hotel for the night if you come to a suitable agreement. The whole scene is rather festival and open, without the usual sleaze associated with prostitution. Some find it fascinating to sit and people watch, and if you’d prefer to sit among it all and quietly sip a beer and watch the ‘footie’ on TV, there usually won’t be any pressure on you.
If you prefer to be discreet there are body massage places with rooms available on site, or private services that come to your hotel room. Others find relaxation in the many massage shops, receiving a nice rub down. You might even meet one of the many respectable women of Pattaya and find in them a nice companion for your visit.
Be warned however, in Pattaya the women who make a living from visitors can be ruthless when it comes to money. If they sense you are new or naïve they’ll try their luck to get as much from you as they can, while others might suggest spending the entire week with you which can turn into an expensive shopping experience. On the other hand, they have families to support and often sit around for days without making a bean in the off season. They are afterall women, and deserve to be treated respectfully. If you are nice to them they’ll give a good time.
